I'll be able to watch this, so that's cool. Though I imagine most of the supporters watching at the bar I go to watch matches will be pro-Barça.

I'm slightly anxious about the match, though with Eto'o causing a degree of unrest, I hope a disorganized Barça shows up to play at the Mestalla.

All or nothing at Mestalla

FC Barcelona and Valencia CF may have the UEFA Champions League on their minds, but they will have to put that to one side when they meet on Sunday night.

Knockout blow
Although next week's last-16 ties against Liverpool FC and FC Internazionale Milano deserve plenty of attention, Barcelona have the chance to consolidate their lead in Spain while delivering a knockout blow to fourth-placed Valencia's title hopes. Should Barça triumph at Mestalla they will have a ten-point advantage over their rivals, who in turn know they can cut the deficit to just four points with victory.

Atlético threat
Valencia's aspirations were severely dented by last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Getafe CF, the same club that knocked Quique Sánchez Flores's side out of the Copa del Rey a month ago. Although they want to look upwards, Valencia also have to be wary of a resurgent Club Atlético de Madrid, who themselves face a huge contest on the same day as they travel to Sevilla FC, who are in second spot, three points behind Barcelona.

Cañizares record
Yet it is the Mestalla meeting that catches the imagination. Barcelona have not enjoyed the best of results against Valencia of late; indeed they have not beaten them at Camp Nou in six seasons. It is a more even story in Valencia, though, with the teams level on 28 wins from 71 league encounters in the eastern city. The hosts have injury problems but sure to figure is goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares. The 37-year-old will make his 400th top-flight appearance, three days after agreeing a new contract until 2009.

Albelda wary
Captain David Albelda knows Cañizares will have to be at his best, but is confident of victory and maintaining a championship challenge. "I think it'll be a well-matched game, despite the fact we play two different styles of football," he said. "We will try to stop Barcelona having the ball and defend at 100 per cent because they only need one chance to score. People say they're not playing well, but they're the leaders. They've lost few matches and I still think they are the best in Europe."

All smiles
Barcelona certainly have reason to be cheerful. Ronaldinho is back and scoring goals, while Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o are nearing full fitness after returning from injuries. They will learn much about their prospects at home and abroad in the next 21 days. A first away success since 19 November would provide a real lift ahead of Primera División meetings with Sevilla and Real Madrid CF. The latter, with David Beckham back in favour, are in action on Saturday at home to Real Betis Balompié and could temporarily move to within two points of top spot.

Soccernet preview

You can click on the url to read the preview.

Basically, it says that Valencia will be without Canizares, Vicente, and Albelda. So Butelle will play, with I imagine Silva on the left side. Not sure who will take the place of Albelda.

Barça have left Eto'o behind, so he won't be a factor. I guess mouthing off at your coach has repurcussions. Messi may get a run-out in the second half. This may seem obvious, but if Valencia want to put the odds in their favor, they will really need to play well right from the beginning, hopefully taking a decent lead in the first half. Ideally, I'd like to see a 4-0 beat down of Barça. I don't think I'm asking for too much.

Is Albelda playing? I just read in the Amunt Valencia forum that he is listed to play.

No Joaquin? Is he injured?

Valencia Win! Valencia Win! 2-1.

The first half was pretty boring, but what a second half! It's a shame that Butelle had his clean sheet broken with that late Ronaldinho goal. I think the weather may have hurt Barça, but I think even with the rain, it was clear they didn't play well. But I have to give Valencia credit, they deserved the win because they were the better side. Barça may have had more possession, but they couldn't do anything with it.

Angulo really had a hell of a game! A goal and an assist. I don't know if he'd be the man of the match, because I thought the central defence pairing of Ayala and Albiol really shut down their attack. I know, it was easier in the first half because Gudjohnsen is somewhat useless (slow, can't dribble players for shit and his scoring touch isn't what it used to be), but in the second half they really limited Barça's chances. I also though Miguel played well in keeping Ronaldinho nicely bottled up throughout the first half.

I was glad to see Silva score. He's been unlucky on quite a few occasions this season. I thought the dual red-cards were somewhat harsh, as the referee completely ignored the foul that happened before in Barça's half and the Ronaldinho elbow on Albelda before the slide tackle. Actually, on second thought, Deco deserved the red card for the two footed challenge, mainly because I think he's a diving/cheating bastard. I think the referee let things get out of hand a little in the second half.

Well, to finish, I thought these players played great:

Marchena
Butelle
Ayala
Miguel
Albiol
Angulo
and Villa.

Morientes wasn't that much of a factor, but played okay. I think Albelda and Silva played well too, but I think the above players stood out for me. Anyway, it was a really nice win, especially since by the end of the match I was the only one at the bar cheering for Valencia. I think the only way I can tolerate Barça fans is when they're silent.

Amunt Valencia!

You forgot the star of MVP of this match: Carlos Marchena. I think he has been perfect doing everything, he defended he attacked with criteria, he has been the best.

Okay, you're right. Correction made. He was the better of the two in Central Midfield.

Still, a great performance from the whole team. And Quique's substitutions actually made sense this time! :)

Please, another again in Milan!!!

Great win!!! :D We won Barça another time!!! It's fantastic!! Butelle was ok and Miguel, Moretti, Albiol, Marchena, Albelda and Angulo played very well. Many players played well!! Barça didn't know the way to win Valencia and we killed them with Angulo and Silva goals!! Unfortunately referee sent off Albelda.. it's true his tackling was hard.

Valencia 2 - Barcelona 1
Deco, Albelda Off As Valencia Edge Vital Win

After a dull first half, Angulo surged clear of Zambrotta to tap David Villa's cross in minutes after the break, and then selflessly set up David Silva for the second minutes later, as Barca went 2-0 down within minutes of the restart. Deco and Albelda were then sent off following some reckless football and retaliation. Ronaldinho pulled one back in injury time, but it was a little too late...

Some thoroughly sloppy (and for Barca fans, thoroughly worrying ahead of Liverpool on Wednesday) defending was a significant contributory in Valencia's 2-1 win.

First Half

Rijkaard started with Iniesta on the right, and Gudjohnsen ahead of Saviola up front, in what was a bit of a surprise.

Valencia, as expected, went with David Villa and Morientes up front, with Silva and Angulo for support.
It was the hosts who threatened first, with David Villa put clean through in the 6th minute, his effort parried by Blaugrana shot-stopper Valdes.

At the other end, Gudjohnsen was nearly threaded through a couple of times by Ronaldinho and his creative entourage, as the visitors showed the typically neat close control and speed of passing in the final third that often characterizes their play.

For the most part both teams nullified each other’s attacks, until close to the half hour mark, when Iniesta burst down the right flank and on to the edge of the Che area, squaring for Gudjohnsen, but the Icelandic striker could only side-foot his shot past the post.

As the half drew to a close, Valencia began to enjoy a little more possession, having attempted to hit Barca on the counter for much of the half, culminating in a defence-splitting one-two from an unlikely source, David Albelda, who fired into the side netting after receiving the return pass from Angulo.

But, by and large, the interplay and build-up became somewhat untidy and increasingly static as tension grew before the break.

Second Half

The game exploded into action after the break, as collective poor defending from Edmilson, Oleguer, Puyol and Zambrotta saw Valencia net their first.

David Villa threaded a neat ball from the left, through Edmilson and Oleguer after drawing them both to him, and Zambrotta and Puyol were caught ball-watching as Angulo burst through them to tap in past Valdes from five yards out.

Ronaldinho missed a great chance to pull Barca back level, and Los Che made them pay, albeit amidst a comedy of errors from the Barca defence.

Angulo scorched down the right flank, again unmarked after a huge overlap, and slid the ball across the six yard box. Barca initially cleared the ball, but only a few yards and straight back to him. To make it worse, Valdes came out to collect in a huge misjudgement, and Angulo cleverly cut it back to Silva, who found the back of a gaping net as Puyol was again nowhere near.

Ronaldinho and Co. soon set about laying siege to the Che goal in an effort to redeem them selves, with the Brazilian in particular teasing the hosts' defence - which ultimately stood firm with greater numbers.

Perhaps the best chance in the remainder of the match fell to Fernando Morientes who, having been put through on goal and with plenty of time, overcompensated with a curling shot as it went disappointingly wide.

The remainder of the match was fraught with yellow cards, angry confrontations and incident. As the tackles flew in, the night threatened to erupt after a catalogue of rough challenges in a matter of seconds led to a mass-melee, resulting in a retribution-seeking David Albelda and affronted Deco both seeing red
Xavi skewed one wide after being set up very well by Giuly, and one sensed that the Catalans wouldn't score if the game continued for another ninety minutes.

Los Che looked like they would hold on comfortably despite Barca's domination, but Ronaldinho pulled one back with a fierce free-kick in injury time, and heaped some serious pressure in the dying minutes to flutter more than a few hearts at the Mestalla.

However, it proved to be a little too late, as time ran out amidst more melee.

Valencia deserved their win, even if only for defending competently when their opponents could not in the key moments. Los Che are surely right in the title race now, and with players slowly returning from injury, Quique Flores will be quietly confident.

For Rijkaard, the pressure increases in La Liga with Sevilla playing at home and currently leading Atletico, a victory putting them level with the Catalans. The defeat also makes the Liverpool fixture all the bigger.

The best of this win is that Barcelona didn't gave never sensation of danger. We didn't suffer at all... well, almost.
