Valencia comeback leaves tie open

Valencia CF's refusal to accept FC Internazionale Milano's initial superiority two weeks ago and their spirited response in scoring two equalisers, has fuelled belief among Quique Sánchez Flores's side that they can claim a quarter-final place in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2003.

• Runaway Serie A leaders Inter had led in both halves of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza encounter through Esteban Cambiasso and fellow midfielder Maicon. Yet Valencia came back not once but twice, long-range efforts from David Villa and David Silva enabling them to finish the game in the better frame of mind.

• The last side to win a UEFA Champions League tie after drawing the first leg at home were FC Porto in the 2003/04 semi-finals. Since then ten teams have tried but failed to regain the initiative in a tie following a home first-leg draw.

• Valencia will be delighted if they can add to their good work in Italy and win the second leg because their opponents have generally had the better of these contests. The sides first met in UEFA club competition in the last eight of the UEFA Cup five seasons ago when, after a 1-1 draw in Milan, Inter triumphed 1-0 in Spain thanks to Nicola Ventola's early strike.

• The teams were reunited in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League the following season. On that occasion Christian Vieri won the home leg for Inter - whose coach Héctor Cúper had recently joined from Valencia - and his goal early in the return proved decisive as it meant the Nerazzurri progressed on away goals after Pablo Aimar and Rubén Baraja had struck for Valencia.

• Two seasons later Inter surpassed those results with a remarkable 5-1 group-stage win at the Mestalla - the third time in four seasons they had won at the stadium - and they will certainly not be returning to Spain short of confidence. On that occasion Dejan Stanković, Adriano and Julio Cruz were all on the scoresheet and despite a scoreless draw in the return, Inter went on to win the group with Valencia finishing third.

• This time, Valencia topped their group with a three-point advantage over AS Roma and took great heart from their home record in Group D which showed maximum points from three games – including a 2-1 success against Roma thanks to goals from Miguel Ángel Angulo and Villa. They also won 3-0 in the home leg of their third qualifying round victory over FC Salzburg.

• In four previous UEFA Champions League campaigns the Spanish side have reached the final twice, losing both.

• Inter are looking for a place in the last eight for the third successive season and their fifth in all. In only one campaign have they missed out on the quarter-finals, in 2003/04 when they finished third in their group. Twelve months ago a Stanković goal in the home return sealed their progress at this stage after they had recovered from AFC Ajax's storming start to draw 2-2 away, Stanković and Cruz scoring second-half goals.

• Inter were European Champion Clubs' Cup winners in 1963/64 and again the following year and that first triumph, a 3-1 victory in Vienna, came at the expense of Spanish opposition in the shape of Real Madrid CF.

• Roberto Mancini's team finished second in Group B behind FC Bayern München and ended the section with a 1-1 draw at the Fußball Arena München. They had won their previous away game, against FC Spartak Moskva, while their first fixture had seen them lose 1-0 at Sporting Clube de Portugal.

• The winning team will advance to the 9 March draw in Athens for the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The Greek capital will also stage the final on Wednesday 23 May.

Okay, so far Inter Coach Mancini, Crespo, Stankovic, and now Dacourt have said that they will win. Well actually, Dacourt is 'confident'. Sort of the same thing.

Dacourt Uefa article.

I must say that I'm somewhat disappointed that the UEFA articles seem to be one sided so far. 'Blah, blah Inter unlucky'...'Blah, Blah, blah Inter confident'....'Blah, blah, blah Inter have won alot of matches in Serie A, seek to continue trend in Champions League'. Stupid UEFA have had I think four or more articles post-draw on Inter, while not a single one about Valencia has surfaced. Not a single one. I mean could their favouritism for Inter be any more obvious?

I figure that Inter will try and come out with guns a blazing. If Quique had some sense, he should field this line-up:

................Canizares...............
..Miguel....Albiol...Ayala.....Moretti/Del Horno (not sure which is better defensively)

........... Viana....Marchena............
Joaquin..........Silva.....................Vicente

...................Villa............................

I'd keep Morientes on the bench in favor of Silva, as he would provide some graft/connection in Central Midfield - I don't think a team can properly counter-attack without a strong Central midfield attacking presence. I just remembered that no Albelda due to cards. So, I'd hope Viana, playing much more defensively, and Marchena would hopefully do well to absorb Inter's pressure while the front four of Joaquin, Silva, Vicente, and Villa would cause enough problems for Inter's midfield and defence that they couldn't afford to gamble and take too many chances.

I have no clue what Quique wants to do, but I fear he will play Angulo instead of Joaquin, Baraja instead of Viana, and Morientes instead of Silva.

I would hate to play that team against Inter. If we did, they'd probably beat us 5-0 again. I'd go for this defintely.

----------------Cañizares------------
--Miguel---Albiol---Ayala--Moretti--
---------Baraja---Marchena---------
-Angulo-------------------------Silva-
----------Morientes---Villa-----------

Viana is not a good player, especially in games like this he is a total liablity. He can't defend well and against a team like inter he won't be able to create because Dacourt and Stankovic will always close him down. Baraja player alround and he can also defend well. Him and Marchena will be a great infront of the defense.

It's most likely going to be Maxwell and Figo starting on the left flank for them. Maxwell gets forward a lot, so having Joaquin they would double up on miguel, with Angulo he'll track back and clean up Maxwell as well as getting up the pitch too.

I'd prefer two strikers as if we get a chance we NEED to score it. Having Silva in the hole isn't the best against this sort of opposition. If we still had say Aimar I'd reconsider.

AND Moretti is BY FAR the best left back at the club. He has to start. That defense I mentioned is really solid and would fit into any side in the world. Del Horno will be good to play in la liga in a few smaller games, but I feel Moretti has to play in the big games. the guy never has a bad game, so consistant and good at winning the balll and playing it on. One of the most underrated players in the world.

My starting 11:

Cañizares
Miguel Albiol Ayala Moretti
Joaquín Baraja Marchena Vicente
Silva Villa

Anyway I think, as hoser says, that Quique will chose Angulo instead of Joaquín.

This is a match, which would suit us a lot.Inter would attack from the kick off & we would sit back & counter attack.Looking at Baraja's & Angulo's performance against Celta,I really have doubt's whetehr to start them. Its time for QQ to start with Jaoquin,he was good when he came in.
I too would prefer a 442 of abraxas.Lets see how Baraja plays & then try to bring in Viana.

Valencia v Inter Milan: Preview
PA

VALENCIA, March 5 (Champions League) - Internazionale striker Adriano is a major injury worry on the eve of the Champions League last-16 return leg against Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium.

Adriano is fighting against the clock to recover from a muscle problem but has travelled to Spain in the hope of being passed fit for the meeting, which is finely poised after the first encounter ended 2-2 at the San Siro a fortnight ago.

The Brazilian did not feature in Saturday's 2-1 triumph at Livorno, a result that saw the Nerazzurri return to winning ways after their 1-1 draw against Udinese.

With 11 games remaining, Roberto Mancini's men have a 16-point cushion over second-placed Roma in Serie A ahead of next weekend's city derby against AC Milan.

But all Nerazzurri eyes will be centred on the midweek European encounter, as Inter attempt to qualify for the quarter-final stages for the third successive campaign.

``We are having an exceptional Serie A tournament,'' said Inter owner Massimo Moratti.

``The fact that we took a further two-point advantage over Roma is an important result because it allows us to focus on our other competitions with more serenity.

``That is why it would be a pity to be eliminated from the Champions League, we have all the ingredients to do well.''

Moratti has reason to be cautious ahead of the Italians' return to Spain, with last year's surprise quarter-final elimination from Europe's elite competition at the hands of underdogs Villarreal still raw.

``We know it's going to be a very hard game in Valencia,'' said Mancini. ``We know this tie is one of the most difficult of all the games in the Champions League.

``But I am convinced we can win in Spain.''

Valencia go into the encounter in confident fashion after Saturday's 1-0 triumph against Celta Vigo revived their Primera Liga title hopes.

The win, courtesy of Fernando Morientes' goal, lifted Valencia to third in the standings, four points behind league leaders Sevilla.

The Spaniards will fancy their chances with coach Quique Sanchez Flores having recovered pivotal midfield duo Ruben Baraja and Vincente for the encounter.

Both players returned to play this weekend having brushed aside their respective injuries which saw them miss the opening leg.

Baraja's return is a blessing as captain David Albelda serves a one-match ban on Tuesday.

``We are in a better position,'' said Vicente. ``We are favourites because in Milan we were the better team. They are strong but we will have no fear.

``I just hope Adriano doesn't play, it's better not to have to face Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adriano together.''

Mancini is likely to leave Adriano on the bench and play instead with Hernan Crespo alongside in-form Ibrahimovic, while Valencia will have Morientes and David Villa up front.

The Nerazzurri will be without injured midfield duo Patrick Vieira and Esteban Cambiasso.

---------------
Funny thing is that Moratti, Inter Milan owner, says that it would be a 'pity' if Inter were to be eliminated from the Champions League. Just because a team is doing exceptionally well in a League doesn't give it the right to win the CL. Serie A, at least this year, is a weak specimen of a League.

Fair enough. It's just that Baraja hasn't been playing well, hence the Viana substitution, but yes, in retrospect, Baraja makes more sense. Though I'd rather have Edu if he were healthy. I'd prefer Joaquin instead of Angulo because he at least provides some pressure on offense...or at least is more likely to. My only worry about fielding Angulo as Quique did against Inter last time is that Quique essentially relies on 3 players to score, Silva, Morientes, and Villa. 3! At least with Joaquin on the pitch Valencia can work on maintaining some possession, thereby leading to fouls and set plays. Because to be honest, it was set plays and not open play that got the draw for Valencia.

Anyway, regardless of formation, I hope for a win.

Medias are saying this morning that Quique has only the doubt where to fit Silva in his starting eleven. Quique is considering two options:

1.
Cañizares
Miguel Albiol Ayala Moretti
Angulo Baraja Marchena Silva
Morientes Villa

2.

From: Goal.com: 'Villa: Biggest Game of the Season'

Villa: Biggest Game Of The Season
Valencia striker David Villa has stressed the magnitude of Tuesday evening’s Champions League second round second-leg clash with Inter.

The Spanish international was a scorer in the 2-2 first-leg draw between the sides at the San Siro.

He said: "It is the most important game we have played until now, although we hope to play even more important games during this season. It is a vital knockout because we all want to be in the following round and to win would eliminate a rival who is very difficult and hard. We'll see if we can produce a great performance.

"Inter's record of 33 games without defeat is spectacular. But Valencia also have quality and we must turn the Mestalla into a bunker tomorrow night. They know they must score, but I don't expect them to go crazy from the first whistle.

"Hopefully I can score again like I did at the San Siro. But the most important thing is we progress. To get to the final eight of the Champions League will be a very proud moment."

So no Jaoquin again ](*,) What does Quique see in Angulo? How is this being taken there?Do u guys like what hes doing with Jaoquin?

I would prefer Silva to start. He was very lively against Celta when he came in.Vicet seems a litle rusty. But in the second half u can bring in Jaoquin & Vicente to bring some pace in the flanks.

In Angulo's defence, he is a hard worker that defends well. What he can contribute to the offense is pretty erratic, as he has a few good games, then has large inconsistent patches. To answer the second question, no, I'm not happy with how Quique has used Joaquin.

I'd prefer Silva to start as well, though I wouldn't mind Vicente either. If Vicente starts, then Morientes starting makes sense, as he has the ability to convert Vicente's passes/crosses. Inter's midfield is in a bit of a mess with injuries to Cambiasso and Vieira - this is the reason why I'd prefer Silva in a dropped role. Regardless, Quique does have a few tough decisions to make with regards to the line-up.

Champions League: Inter looking for goals at Valencia in second leg
The Associated Press
Published: March 5, 2007

VALENCIA, Spain: Inter Milan needs to attack the goal Tuesday at Valencia in order to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League, and that suits the Spanish team nicely.

Valencia held the Italian league leaders to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the second round on Feb. 21 at the San Siro, giving the Spaniards the advantage with two away goals.

"Inter need to go out and score a goal. They don't want a draw," Valencia midfielder Vicente Rodriguez said. "For that we're going to find a lot of space and many opportunities to score."

Inter is hoping the extra pressure will be good for the team.

"In many ways a 2-2 draw is better than a 2-1 win because it means that we have to go over there and win rather than trying to defend a narrow lead," Inter midfielder Olivier Dacourt said. "We know that we can take the game to them and win and we're confident that that's exactly what we will do."

In their last two meetings over two legs — in the 2003 Champions League and the 2002 UEFA Cup — Inter advanced both times.

"Floating in the air is this idea that Inter snatched two (European) seasons away from Valencia and I think, within reason, that we didn't deserve them," Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores said Monday. "We want to rewrite history and calibrate it. If, in taking this sporting revenge, it raises the grade and takes us to the maximum intensity, then it will have been a good way to raise our games."

None of that will deter the visitors.

"We're going to Valencia to win," Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic said. "We're strong and playing with confidence. Everything is in our hands."

Ibrahimovic scored the winning goal in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Livorno — Inter's 22nd victory in 26 league games this season. The Milan club is 16 points ahead of second-place AS Roma in the Serie A.

Valencia has no injury problems, with Spain midfielders Vicente and Ruben Baraja returning for Saturday's 1-0 win over Celta after injury setbacks. Defender Asier del Horno also made his debut for Valencia after recovering from an Achilles tendon injury.

Inter will be without Patrick Vieira and Esteban Cambiasso, while striker Adriano is still in doubt.

Valencia has lost only twice in 18 matches at the Mestalla stadium this season, where it went 3-0 in the group stage.

"We shouldn't have any fear of Inter," Vicente said. "It's true we're talking about a very strong team, but in these matches the motivation is bigger and concentration also. These are the kinds of games we all like to play."

Though it has had trouble defending leads in the Spanish league this season, Valencia twice rallied at the San Siro. Valencia is third in the Spanish league — four points behind leader Sevilla.

"It would be of little convenience to change (our style of play), which has been good," Flores said. "From abroad we are pigeonholed with (a certain) style of play, but we have more means of playing then just defending and attacking. We are capable in big matches, and we have more command in our squad than Inter with less to repair than them, while in attack they are more individualistic."

Inter midfielder Luis Figo is confident that Inter can advance to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.

"They play like a lot of Italian teams," said Figo, who will play his first match in Spain since joining from Real Madrid in August 2005.

Hmph, purchased from Reuters.

Valencia aim to settle score in Inter vendetta
MADRID, March 5 (Reuters) - Valencia are aiming to settle a score with Inter Milan in the Champions League after falling victim to the Italians in recent European clashes.
"I can understand that in sporting terms there is talk of a "vendetta" especially amongst the fans because the two sides have been involved in some intense duels and Inter have always got the better of us," midfielder Ruben Baraja told a news conference on the eve of Tuesday's first knockout round second-leg tie.
Inter knocked Valencia out of the UEFA Cup at the quarter-final stage in 2002, repeated the trick in the Champions League the following season and inflicted a heavy defeat on the Spaniards that helped put them out in the group stage in 2004.
"All of us who played in those games want to get through this tie and knock out an excellent team," added Baraja.
Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores agreed with the midfielder, saying the team had the chance to avenge their previous defeats after earning a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Milan.
"Inter have destroyed our hopes on previous occasions and now is a good time to rewrite the story," he said. "We have the added motivation in that we know there is no way back after this game. One of the two teams will be going out."
Valencia fans are reported to have prepared a giant mosaic with the word "Vendetta" which will be paraded in the stands at the start of Tuesday's match.
